Chelsea's Jose Mourinho criticized for handling of medical staff

Chelsea's team doctor and physio can now count three more supporters in the standoff with manager Jose Mourinho.

Both the Football Medical Association and Professional Footballers' Association are standing behind Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn, with the FMA saying in a statement that the two "acted with integrity and professionalism at all times."

The PFA said in its own statement that the current medical protocol has "worked successfully in past seasons," adding that only the player and referee decide whether treatment is necessary.

The uproar comes after Mourinho publicly criticized the decision to pull off forward Eden Hazard during stoppage time of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Swansea City.

Mourinho told reporters that the medical staff put the the team at a numerical disadvantage - Chelsea was already down a man - and questioned their understanding of the game.

"If you go to the pitch to assist a player, then you must be sure that a player has a serious problem," Mourinho said.

Joining the chorus against Mourinho is the former head of Liverpool's sports medicine department, Peter Brukner.

Brukner, who's now a team doctor for the Australian cricket team, believes Carneiro and Fearn deserve an apology.

"I thought it was appalling behaviour by the manager ... I'm very disappointed the club hasn't come out and done something to support them," Brukner told talkSPORT. "They were just doing their job."

Carneiro and Fearn will reportedly have their duties scaled back, with training sessions and matches now off-limits. Neither is expected to make the trip for Sunday's match against Manchester City.

Brukner said the medical staff were well within their rights to enter the field to tend to Hazard.

"What do you expect the doctor to do, just ignore the referee beckoning them on? They were only responding to the referee's instruction to come and ... treat the player," said Brukner.
