3 potential landing spots for Dave Dombrowski

David Manning / USA TODAY Sports

Dave Dombrowski is out as general manager of the Detroit Tigers but don't expect the 59-year-old to remain unemployed for long.

The architect of a Tigers team that have claimed four straight American League Central division titles, Dombrowski was surprisingly given his release by owner Mike Ilitch on Tuesday after 14 years of service in order to pursue other opportunities.

Here are three potential landing spots for the executive:

Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays and Dombrowski have long been linked to one another, as he interviewed for the GM position that eventually went to J.P. Ricciardi back in 2001. Dombrowski and the Blue Jays certainly have a familiarity, conducting a pair of trades with one another this season, including a deal that sent David Price north of the border. With president Paul Beeston stepping down at season's end, Dombrowski could be primed to slide into the role. The Blue Jays also took an extended look at Baltimore Orioles GM Dan Duquette prior to this season to succeed Beeston, though Dombrowski's free-agent status is likely very appealing to Toronto.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox announced last week that they plan on replacing longtime president and CEO Larry Lucchino with Sam Kennedy at the end of the season. An understudy of Lucchino for 20 years, Kennedy models the Red Sox philosophy of promoting from within, making it unlikely that they pull a 180 and extend an offer to Dombrowski instead. Red Sox owner John Henry and Dombrowski do, however, have history linking back to their time with the Marlins, so don't rule out Boston offering him some sort of front office role, especially after back-to-back losing seasons and deep pockets.

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels front office has been influx since the resignation of GM Jerry Dipoto last month. Bill Stoneman has taken over on an interim basis for the rest of the season, though the Angels are looking to hire for the position. With higher profile jobs available, it would be expected that Dombrowski would prefer a presidential role over GM, though the big-budget Angels could likely afford a high-salaried executive like Dombrowski.
