Muhammad Wilkerson's series of pleas for a new contract isn't the New York Jets' biggest issue on the defensive line right now.

Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson has been suspended four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy, the team announced. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News is reporting the suspension is for marijuana use.

Richardson released a statement following the news:

"I apologize for letting down my family, teammates, this organization and the fans. However, words aren't enough," he said. "This is something that can only be addressed by how I handle myself from this point on. I don't want this to take away from what the team is trying to accomplish. While I won't be there at the start of the regular season, I will do whatever I can to support my teammates until I'm able to return to the field."

New York head coach Todd Bowles voiced his support for Richardson, even though he conceded it was a disappointment.

"This is disappointing for Sheldon and the team," he said. "We’re going to support Sheldon and welcome him back upon his return. We will keep moving forward with our preparations for the upcoming season."

Preparing for the season is now going to mean an increased role for rookie Leonard Williams. The sixth overall pick will be called on to contribute immediately with Richardson missing for the first month.

The Jets will be without Richardson for games against the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, and Miami Dolphins. While losing him for any amount of time is significant, missing Richardson for clashes against the Colts and Eagles is especially tough. Both squads boast two of the league's most explosive offenses.

New York has been a top-five defense against the run over the last two seasons, and it remains to be seen how the loss of Richardson will impact that in the early part of the season.

Richardson remains eligible to participate in all offseason practices and preseason games, but won't be able to suit up until Oct. 18, when the Jets take on the Washington Redskins.
