Sunderland signs Sebastian Coates on permanent transfer from Liverpool

Sebastian Coates helped Sunderland avoid relegation from the Premier League last season, and now he is being rewarded for that impact.

The Black Cats announced Wednesday that they have reached an agreement with Liverpool for the permanent transfer of the Uruguayan defender, who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, making 13 appearances for the club.

Coates, 24, made just 17 starts in four seasons at Liverpool, and despite still being relatively young, was obviously looking for an opportunity to get legitimate minutes this season. He'll have that chance now.

Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton had this to say of the signing:

“Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick [Advocaat] last season and we are delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis.

“He has Barclays Premier League experience, which is important and, after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly.”
