Gonzalo Jara has been banned for the rest of the Copa America for his despicable actions to gain an edge on his opponent.

The disgraced Chilean defender was given a three-match suspension from the CONMEBOL disciplinary committee to officially end his bid to win the tournament on home soil after his vulgar act of aggression toward Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani.

The suspension occurs on the heels of news that his club in Germany, FSV Mainz 05, will release him. The team's sports director Christian Heidel revealed that he was more disturbed by Jara's antics immediately following the incident in which he poked Cavani's backside.

Cavani was given a yellow card for the event when he reacted by striking Jara under the chin. Jara then went down theatrically and clutched his face.

Jara was not initially penalised and remained in the game as Chile won the match to advance to the semifinals, where they will play Peru.

The federations for both countries lodged formal complaints against each other on June 27. Uruguay`s complaint centred around Cavani being provoked by his opponent, while Chile defended Jara's actions by accusing several Uruguayans of using aggression and insults towards their players.
