Eli Manning's agent confident Giants will offer long-term deal

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will become an unrestricted free agent at season's end but there doesn't appear to be any concerns over a lack of negotiations up to this point.

His agent is confident a deal will get done and Manning will not hit the open market in 2016.

"The quarterbacks always get done," Tom Condon told Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. "And the Giants are not a skittish team. So it's not one of those things where they get nervous or they jump around or anything like that. You know you're going to go in and it's going to get done. I'm sure at the appropriate time it'll happen."

Condon's confidence is related to quarterbacks of Manning's talent-level rarely becoming unrestricted free agents. Teams are generally unwilling to let starting quarterbacks walk, the way other elite players do.

"It's an extraordinarily hard position to fill, as you know," said Condon. "You actually have some leverage with the quarterbacks. The only problem is there's a salary cap. But let's face it, sooner or later..."

The knowledge that Manning will get signed creates an easy bargaining position for Condon, forcing the team to decide on making an offer before the season starts or risk Manning having a great season and being forced to pay him more. Either way, a two-time Super Bowl MVP has never hit the open market.

"The interesting part about it is, since 1993, the inception of free agency, has there ever been an elite quarterback hit the open market?" Condon said. "Peyton, but he had four neck surgeries and no idea if he would ever be well enough to play. Drew Brees, when he went to New Orleans, he had 15 studs in his shoulder, in his throwing arm."
