NFL, City of San Diego executives meet about new stadium proposal

The city of San Diego and NFL executives met for an hour Tuesday to discuss a prospective stadium development in the city.

The San Diego Chargers told city officials last week they'd be unlikely to coordinate a public vote over financing for a new stadium before the NFL's Dec. 15 deadline to submit an application to relocate.

On April 21, the Carson City Council approved a $1.7 billion stadium to be dually owned by the Chargers and Oakland Raiders.

Many believe the Chargers are set on moving to Los Angeles County, and the city is scrambling to come up with a plan to keep the team in San Diego.

"It was intended as an introductory meeting and an overall outline, and it served that purpose," NFL executive Eric Grubman said to David Garrick of San Diego Union-Tribune. "We did not discuss the merits of the project or specific terms that might be proposed."

The city is still responsible for putting together an environmental impact study, and if they are to retain the club, would likely need to submit a proposal that doesn't require public financing.

Both parties are expected to meet ahead of the Aug. 11 NFL owner's meeting, where the Chargers are expected to rapidly accelerate their relocation bid.
