Report: Kings potentially a 'dark horse' destination for Rondo

With a horse racing Triple Crown winner this weekend for the first time since 1978, the equine terminology is flowing. As such, Rajon Rondo may consider the Sacramento Kings as a "dark horse location" in free agency, Garry Washburn of the Boston Globe reports.

Where Rondo lands this summer will be a topic of much interest. After detonating his Dallas Mavericks bridge so thoroughly that they denied him his playoff share, there are rumblings that teams are leery of signing the notoriously mercurial point guard.

The Los Angeles Lakers have long been considered a logical suitor thanks in part to his friendship with Kobe Bryant, but reports have also indicated that the team's front office is torn about investing a big chunk of its 2015 cap space in Rondo.

While point guard is not the Kings' most immediate need at the moment, signing Rondo could be an intriguing option. Sacramento inked Darren Collison to a three-year, $16-million pact last summer, but he missed 37 games with a core injury.

Rondo, like all 2015 upper-crust unrestricted free agents, is also in the unique situation where it might make financial sense to sign a one- or two-year contract in an effort to reap the rewards of a higher salary cap after next season.

With Rondo's reputation taking a further hit after the Dallas experiment, it may behoove him to sign short term with a team like Sacramento anyways. While a pairing with DeMarcus Cousins could set records for moodiness, Rondo is apparently also close with Kings forward Rudy Gay.
