Phillies select high school shortstop Cornelius Randolph with 10th overall pick

Look back at every pick from Day 1 of the MLB Draft with theScore's MLB Draft Tracker, which includes trades and rumors from around the league.

For the second time in the last three years, the Philadelphia Phillies used their top draft pick on a young shortstop, grabbing Georgia high-schooler Cornelius Randolph with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft on Monday night.

A position change may be necessary for Randolph in professional baseball, but the teenager's hitting ability and power potential will allow him to keep providing value, even if he's forced off shortstop down the road. Still, Randolph provides the Phillies with another shortstop prospect to dream on, just two years after they selected J.P. Crawford out of a California high school with the 16th overall pick in the 2013 draft.

Overview

Randolph has committed to Clemson and comes from a high school that's already produced major-league infielders Jeff Treadway and Tim Beckham. Randolph is known for his ability to hit for power and average, but lacks quickness in the infield, and his arm ranks as average. A good MLB comparison would be Dmitri Young, who hit 171 career homers and drove in 683 runs over 13 seasons.
