Warriors-Cavaliers Game 1 shatters ratings records
After an excruciating eight-day layoff, Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors tipped off before a record-breaking audience.
Thursday's overtime thriller delivered a 12.9 overnight rating, making it the highest-ranked NBA Finals Game 1 ever on ABC, the league announced on Friday.
The broadcast peaked at 15.6 between 11:30 and 11:45 p.m. ET, which spans much of the third quarter. That's when LeBron James scored 12 of his game-high 44 points in the Cavaliers' heartbreaking loss.
Ratings are up 24 percent over last season's Game 1, which drew a 10.4 rating. That's when James battled the San Antonio Spurs (and faulty air conditioning) as a member of the Miami Heat.
Game 1 also shattered local records in Cleveland and San Francisco. Game 1 on ABC posted a 41.4 rating in Cleveland and 28.9 in the Bay Area.
