The excitement around the football world was obvious in the moments after Sepp Blatter's announcement that he will resign as FIFA president.

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke - who was against Blatter serving as FIFA's leader for another four years following Friday's election victory - could hardly contain himself when asked about the stunning revelation.

Dyke predicted Blatter's presidential run would end prematurely after the FIFA Congress, where the Swiss International beat Prince Ali bin al-Hussein by a vote of 133-73, after which the Jordanian conceded defeat before a second round of voting could take place.

Dyke was also a supporter of UEFA and its federations boycotting the World Cup. The European governing body was set to reassess its relationship with FIFA following Blatter's controversial re-election.

"I never thought he could sustain his position but even I am shocked he only lasted four days," Dyke told Sky Sports. "He was triumphant in Zurich - four days later he’s gone. So - who got him? That’s the interesting question.

"Something has happened between then and now which means he has to resign.

"I just don’t think he’s the kind of person who would have a moral conversion on the ‘road to Damascus’ - he would have hung on forever. There’s no doubt something has happened and we’ll find out over the next few days.

Dyke also called for clarity on how the organization as a whole is run and said the next president must be above suspicion in order to fulfill the duty of FIFA president honourably.

"The real issue now is that whoever replaces Blatter has to be squeaky clean - it has to be someone who can bring in the forensic accountants to sort out the money and find out where it’s gone.

"We don’t even know how these people get paid, what their expenses are - we know nothing.

"It’s got to be transparent."
