Women's Seeds Advancing

No. 1 Serena Williams defeats Sloane Stephens 1-6, 7-5, 6-3
No. 17 Sara Errani defeats Julia Gorges 6-2, 6-2
No. 21 Garbine Muguruza defeats No. 28 Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4

Notes: Williams wins her third consecutive match after dropping the first set for the first time since the 1999 U.S. Open and will move on to face Errani. ... In other action Monday, 93rd-ranked Alison Van Uytvanck beat 100th-ranked Andreea Mitu to advance to her first career Grand Slam quarterfinal. The win will launch Van Uytvanck into the top 50 in the WTA rankings.

Women's Seeds Upset

No. 13 Lucie Safarova defeats No. 2 Maria Sharapova 7-6, 6-4
No. 23 Timea Bacsinszky defeats No. 4 Petra Kvitova 2-6, 6-0, 6-3

Notes: This is Sharapova's first loss at the French Open since 2013 when she lost in the final to Serena Williams. Sharapova entered as the defending champion and also claimed victory at Rolland Garros in 2012. ... Safarova, whose Grand Slam record since 2014 has been very impressive, will move on to face Muguruza in the quarters. ... With Kvitova losing, No. 1 Williams and No. 7 Ana Ivanovic are the only top-10 women still alive among the final eight in Paris.

Men's Seeds Advancing

Nadal lost his first set of the tournament against 37th-ranked Sock in his record 70th career win at Roland Garros. ... Nadal and Djokovic will meet for one of the most anticipated quarterfinal matches in recent history. The Spaniard said of the Serb, ''To have any chance against him I have to play my real best tennis.'' ... Ferrer would break Cilic five times in his 13 service games en route to the fourth round win. ...
