Mayweather-Pacquiao set gate and pay-per-view records

Steve Marcus / USA TODAY Sports

While the fight failed to live up to the hype, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio KO'd the all time pay-per-view record.

Showtime and HBO announced Tuesday Mayweather's 12 round unanimous decision over Pacquiao on May 2 had 4.4 million pay-per-view buys. It's a record-breaking number that comes despite some American customers experiencing blackouts, as cable providers failed to meet the demands coming from those trying to order the fight.

While the television numbers were exuberant, so were the numbers at the gate.

The bout shattered all-time boxing live gate records by more than three times. Sales from the 16,219 tickets generated $72,198,500, eclipsing the previous record of $20,003,150, reports Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Of all the tickets issued, Rafael notes than nine went unsold.
