Randy Gregory: 'I have some issues I'm taking care of'

Nebraska edge rusher Randy Gregory is the lone remaining undrafted player in the green room, the loneliest seat in Chicago.

He seems to know why no team has called his name despite possessing talent some analysts say ranks as the best among all defenders in the draft.

"Obviously I wanted to be drafted early. That’s the main goal. I honestly think I’m elite. But I also have problems. I have some issues I’m taking care of, and those I think are up in the air, obviously, because I haven’t been picked yet," Gregory said in an interview on ESPN.

Precisely what Gregory's issues are remains unclear. He reportedly failed a drug test at the combine, but there are whispers he's dealing with more significant psychological difficulties.

A cryptic report from NFL Network's Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport ahead of the draft didn't go into detail, but included this telling passage:

(A)ccording to more than a dozen coaches, scouts, personnel chiefs and GMs, there is concern about Gregory’s ability to handle the mental rigors of professional football. And just how far he drops in this week’s draft will likely hinge on the individual psychological profiles (and the results of related testing) put together by each team, according to multiple veteran evaluators.

If Gregory is truly working to get whatever his issues are under control, he could represent one of the best values in the draft.
