Jimmy Howard won't request trade, plans to compete for Red Wings' starting job

Jimmy Howard doesn't plan on leaving the Detroit Red Wings any time soon.

The goaltender said Friday he will not ask for a trade despite being outplayed and supplanted by Petr Mrazek as the team's No. 1 netminder.

Howard made only one playoff appearance - in relief of Mrazek - during a 5-1 Game 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 18.

Mrazek allowed 14 goals in the series, making several highlight-reel saves despite his team losing in seven games.

Howard went 23-13-11 with a 2.44 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in 53 regular-season contests, while the 23-year-old Mrazek went 16-9-2 with a .918 save percentage and 2.38 GAA in 29 games prior to the playoffs.

Despite Howard's edge in experience, he'll be forced to win back the job he once held when training camp opens in the fall.
