Electrical company urges Filipinos to turn off major appliances during fight

Everyone wants to watch "The Fight of the Century." And in the Philippines, that means sacrifices will have to be made.

Rante Ramos, who works at Palawan Electric Company, is urging customers to turn off major appliances so the power doesn't go out in Palawan, an island province, during this weekend's bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Ramos said:

If it is just for the Pacquiao fight, let us just leave electric fans and TVs on. We have waited so long for this, and now that it will happen ... it is unacceptable not to have the opportunity to watch it.

Palawan has dealt with regular power outages recently, averaging three hours long, according to The Associated Press. Shutting down air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and electric pots will go a long way toward making sure everyone can watch the entire fight when it's aired in the Philippines on Sunday.

Others are doing their part, too:

Big power consumers such as malls, department stores and hotels have agreed to disconnect from the grid and use their own power generators from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday to also help reduce the load.

This is bigger than Pacquiao-Mayweather, Ramos was sure to add.

"This is not only for the fight. We also want to teach citizens to show concern for fellow citizens, and of course to save electricity."
