Report: Wiggins to be named Rookie of the Year on Thursday

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

To the surprise of no one, Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Andrew Wiggins will be named the NBA Rookie of the Year, according to multiple reports.

The Timberwolves and the league will hold a news conference on Thursday afternoon to announce the news.

While injuries to fellow rookies Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid undoubtedly helped clear the path for Wiggins to win the award, the 20-year-old Canadian demonstrated he's a superstar in the making, averaging 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds while winning four of the six Western Conference Rookie of the Month awards this season.

Wiggins will become only the second non-American player to take honors for the NBA's top rookie - the first was Pau Gasol in 2002. He will also be the first Canadian to pick up any of the NBA's award hardware since Steve Nash won his second of back-to-back MVPs in 2006.
