49ers Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bob St. Clair dies at 84
Former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Bob St. Clair has passed away at 84 after a brief illness.
St. Clair played with the 49ers from 1953 to 1963 and was named an All Pro in nine of his 11 seasons. He was also named to the 1950s All-Decade Team.
Standing at an impressive 6-foot-9, St. Clair blocked an incredible 10 field goals in 1956. One of those left its mark, St. Clair told the 49ers' website in 2010.
"I blocked against Norm Van Brocklin, who was playing with the Rams and I knocked the ball away from his foot," St. Clair said. "I was in there so quickly that he kicked me in the teeth."
He lost five teeth, but was undeterred.
"I went over to the sideline and they shoved cotton in my mouth and until it got so bad I had to take Novocain in my mouth, but I kept playing."
The third-round pick had his No. 79 retired by the 49ers and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
