VIDEO: Mirotic strains left quad, gets into scuffle with Pachulia
Call it a Pyrrhic victory.
The Chicago Bulls went up 2-0 against the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, but they may have lost Nikola Mirotic in the process.
The Spanish-Montenegrin rookie banged legs with O.J. Mayo while fighting for a loose ball late in the fourth quarter, an injury that sent him to the locker room for the final 2:47 of the game. He was noticeably limping afterward and getting additional treatment, with the team calling the injury a left quad strain.
Possibly making matters worse was Mirotic's scuffle with Zaza Pachulia that immediately followed, as the Georgian landed on Mirotic's leg. The European bigs then traded shoves, leading to double technicals.
That meant an ejection for Pachulia, who had picked up another technical foul just 73 seconds earlier for elbowing Mirotic in the head.
There is some concern in the Bulls locker room that Mirotic may also have suffered a concussion on that elbow, raising the question of why he wasn't removed as a precautionary measure for evaluation.
Big man Paul Gasol weighed in on his teammate's injury after after the victory.
"Hopefully it won't be anything serious," said Gasol. "I think Zaza had a couple of bad plays, not basketball plays. He got penalized with technicals, but just got to protect players."
Monday was quite a heated game, as Pachulia and Mirotic weren't the only players to tangle. They'll all have until Thursday to cool off, a break that the Bulls will surely hope is enough time for Mirotic - who has 13 points and nine rebounds through two playoff games - to recover.
