Blue Jays' Reyes has cracked rib, hoping to avoid DL stint
A stint on the disabled list appears imminent for Jose Reyes.
The Toronto Blue Jays shortstop has a cracked rib in his lower left side that occurred on a check swing last week versus the Baltimore Orioles. An MRI also revealed a muscle strain. The injuries will keep Reyes out through the weekend at least.
Toronto, off Monday, will decide the following day whether to place him on the DL.
Reyes logged one at-bat against Chris Archer in Thursday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays before exiting the contest, telling reporters that it would have been dangerous to continue playing. He was replaced by Ryan Goins, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.
"It's up to me," Reyes said. "I know my body. It happened the first game in Baltimore and you know what kind of series that I have in Baltimore. That is stuff that you have to take. Sometimes that stuff gets worse. But you don't know in the moment. I just want to be on the field. It bothered me a little bit more and I had to get out of the game."
The switch-hitter and leadoff man is particularly bothered when swinging from the left side. He's been wearing a compression jacket in an effort to combat the discomfort.
"The best thing for that kind of injury," Reyes said, "is rest."
Despite the injuries, Reyes has started off the season strong, hitting .324/.350/.405 with three doubles and five RBIs through nine games.
Reyes has battled numerous injuries throughout his career, having played more than 150 games just once in the last six seasons.
