Will Ferrell reflects on MLB debut: 'There were moments that were terrifying'

One week after playing all 10 positions - including DH - in one day for 10 different teams, pseudo major leaguer Will Ferrell had an opportunity to reflect on David Letterman's couch.

The actor took part in Cactus League games last Thursday as part of a cancer awareness HBO special in partnership with MLB, and in honor of Bert Campaneris, who fielded all nine positions during a regular-season game in 1965.

Ferrell appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday, acknowledging the event wasn't all fun and games.

"There were moments that were terrifying," said the 47-year-old, who struck out in his only two at-bats. "Trying to hit a 90-mph fastball - it's next to impossible.

"The other intimidating thing is when they smile at you on the mound. They just smile, a sly smile, and then they throw it as hard as they can."

While he avoided having any balls hit to him during his time in the infield, Ferrell did field a couple balls in the outfield. His time with the Arizona Diamondbacks ended up being the most eventful.

"The lowlight was probably playing left field for the Diamondbacks," Ferrell said. "I entered the game and they were down 9-1, when I left we were losing 12-1 after four consecutive balls were hit to me in the outfield.

"They were balls that a major leaguer would have gotten to. I'm just too damn slow."

Ferrell tried to get his teammates motivated despite the 11-run deficit, but said they weren't amused  - forcing him to switch sides.

"I tried to joke around with the guys - they didn't like that. I said, 'Come on guys, here we go, a little 11-run rally, we can do it,' and no one would look at me. So I just walked over to the Reds' dugout cause that was the next team I was supposed to play for. Then I told the Reds, 'This dugout is a lot more fun, you don't want to be over there.' "

After hitting the field in the early morning to take batting practice with the Oakland Athletics, Ferrell's journey didn't wrap up until almost midnight on the East Coast. While he boasted prior to the games that he possess a "physique a lot of people would dream of having," he admitted he was a little sore after.

"I felt OK," he said. "I did take a bath in Tiger Balm, you can't do that. I know that now. Didn't know that then."

Ferrell joked that his goal heading into the day was to land a major-league job, and that dream apparently lives on.

"I'm still hoping for a call. I feel like I turned some heads," he said.
