5 biggest personalities in hockey

Reuters

We've all heard of the phrase 'A personality can go a long way.'

It's true, even in hockey.

Big personalities are needed because although hockey is a sport, it's also entertainment and what would an event be without characters to lead the way?

Here are the five biggest personalities in hockey.

Ilya Bryzgalov

Okay, technically Ilya Bryzgalov isn't playing hockey, but he did appear in eight games for the Anaheim Ducks before being placed on unconditional waivers and returning home to spend time with his family.

Bryzgalov is an interesting character with a strange, but hilarious personality. From epic to bizarre quotes, Bryzgalov has always been good for a laugh, while also having the ability to make you go huh.

P.K. Subban

The smile, the voice, the body language, both on and off the ice.

P.K. Subban has a huge personality and it shines brightly.

The 25-year-old Montreal Canadiens defenseman lights people up with hits, flashes a huge white toothed smile after blasting a rocket shot passed a netminder and loves to joke around with his teammates.

Subban is not only one of the best defenseman in the league, but he gives the NHL a personality that people are drawn to.

He's a hard player not to like.

Jeremy Roenick

Jeremy Roenick doesn't play the game anymore, but he's still very involved, providing analysis and keeping himself glued into the hockey world.

Whether he's eating burgers in support of Andrew Hammond or spouting off about his likes or dislikes about a particular franchise, Roenick's personality is easy to notice.

From dazzling stick work to amazing quotes, 'J.R' is someone the hockey world haven't been able to keep their eyes off of.

Alex Ovechkin

'Ovi', 'Alexander the GR8', or Ovechkin. Whatever you choose to call him, one thing is for sure, Alex Ovechkin has proven he's one of the best hockey players of this generation and his personality is so boisterous that it's hard not to like Ovi's antics.

From interviewing Sidney Crosby to begging to be selected last by all-star captains so he can win a car, it's obvious Ovechkin is fond of making a good joke and his bratty grin adds to his giant personality.

What would the game be without Ovechkin?

Don Cherry

Like him or not. Don Cherry is still the biggest personality in hockey.

If you've watched hockey you've seen Coach's Corner, which has been a staple in the game since the early 80's.

Cherry has a certain bravado that society lacks. His thoughts are his and he'll let you know what's on his mind, even if giving his opinion comes with repercussions.

The hockey world respects him for what he is and no matter what backlash may come from him speaking his mind, don't expect him to ever change.

The former coach is one of the game's most recognizable faces and has become a celebrity that is synonymous with hockey.
