Pacquiao's trainer rips Mayweather's dad: 'Floyd Sr. is a terrible cornerman'

Freddie Roach is already trying to worm his way under Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s skin.

As the super fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao draws closer, Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, has decided to point out what he perceives is the most glaring flaw in "Money's" preparation for the showdown on May 2.

According to Roach, Mayweather's choice to train with his father, Floyd Sr., instead of his uncle, Roger, may prove to be the undefeated champion's downfall.

"My whole thing is, Floyd's not going to have his best cornerman in his corner because there's no question in my mind that Roger is the better trainer," Roach told Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole. "Floyd got 90 percent of his wins with Roger working with him. Roger is way better. I think Floyd Sr. is a terrible cornerman, I really do. That's going to work to our advantage on fight night because in the corner, I'm not going to be nervous and I'll be able to calmly talk to Manny and make whatever adjustments we have to make.

"But Floyd Sr. can't get his message out in that minute (rest) period. He gets so excited and worked up and he starts to stutter so he can't give his fighter any useful (information)."

Of course, Roach's words are likely a calculated move designed to seep into Mayweather's psyche, especially when you consider the pound-for-pound great is 27-0 with his father in his corner, and 20-0 under his uncle's tutelage.

"You can't always watch a fighter on TV in the corner and listen in and hear what they are saying and make proof positive deductions off it," John Scully, a longtime trainer, told CBS Sports' Lyle Fitzsimmons. "A trainer may say something that sounds off base or even flat-out wrong to the listener, but the fact is that sometimes a trainer and a fighter have a special way of communicating with each other that works for them. Sometimes the trainer may find an unusual way of reaching his boxer that doesn't really sound that good to the uninformed ear.

"In regards to Floyd Sr. in his son's corner, I know Floyd Jr. realizes this is the event of a lifetime and if he felt there was any problem or potential glitch with his having his father there, then he would rule it out."
