John Terry hopes to sign new Chelsea contract

John Terry remains positive about his future at Stamford Bridge, recently revealing his desire to extend his stay at the club he's called home since he was 14.

Despite a lack of communication on a new deal between Terry and the club, the Chelsea captain hinted to reporters that negotiations could begin soon.

"The club know my position, I know theirs and it will hopefully get done," Terry said after Chelsea's draw with Paris Saint-Germain. "No talks have happened yet but we both respect the position."

The 34-year-old is aware that locking him up for another season is not necessarily at the top of the team's priority list and accepts that younger players with promising futures need to get their contracts sorted first.

"There are a lot more important players than me - (Eden) Hazard's one that's just been done, and that's the most important thing for the club," Terry said. "Without them even telling me that, I know that's the priority for them and hopefully they'll be knocking on the door soon."

Even at his advanced age, Terry has continued to get the majority of starts at centre back, appearing in all of Chelsea's Premier League and Champions League games.

The next generation of defenders, however, are beginning to emerge, as Kurt Zouma has shown signs that he's capable of assuming duties in the heart of the Chelsea defence.

While he welcomes the challenge, Terry also sees it as motivation to keep his spot in the starting lineup.

"When you see the young boys come in - Kurt has been a revelation - they're young, fit, strong and hungry, and it makes it even more difficult," he said. "But in the same way, myself, Stevie (Steven Gerrard), Rio (Ferdinand) and Lamps (Frank Lampard) have looked after ourselves for the last five, six years and it's helping us in our later careers.

"Hopefully one more (season) and we'll see how we go. I'm taking it year-by-year."
