Brouwer the hero with late PP goal as Capitals top Blackhawks in Winter Classic

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Troy Brouwer spun and fired a shot from the left hash marks past Corey Crawford on a power play with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Washington Capitals over the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 Winter Classic.

My favorite angle of the game winning goal here. Brouwer's celebration is pretty strong too

Here's what you need to know from the NHL's annual outdoor event:

  • Capitals forward Eric Fehr opened the scoring with his third career Winter Classic goal.
  • Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington, while Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad added goals for the Blackhawks.
  • Braden Holtby stopped 33 shots for the victory, while Crawford finished with 33 saves.
  • Ice conditions were among the best in Winter Classic history, but the temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit during the game softened the surface as the contest wore on.
  • The game started on time despite concerns about glare from the sun delaying proceedings.
  • All players from both teams wore "CR" on their helmets to honor Blackhawks equipment manager Clint Reif, who passed away in December.
  • The teams switched ends midway through the first period due to the sunlight affecting one end of the ice more than the other.
  • Ovechkin hit two posts within a minute in the second period shortly before Saad's goal tied the contest at 2-2.
  • Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews became the all-time outdoor points leader with five.
  • Announced attendance at Nationals Park was 42,832.
