Orioles' Angelos on Duquette-to-Toronto rumor: He has a contract to honor

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

After helping guide the Baltimore Orioles to their first American League East title in 17 years, executive vice president Dan Duquette is reportedly ready for a new challenge.

Duquette is said to be among the top candidates to replace Toronto Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston, and a report Sunday claimed the interest is mutual.

There's just one problem: Duquette is under contract through the 2018 season and Orioles managing partner Peter Angelos has no intention of letting him jump ship to a division rival.

“We signed him (to an extension in 2012)," Angelos told the Baltimore Sun. "He has a commitment for four more years and he has done quite a job for us. We are very pleased with his performance and we expect him to satisfy his contract."

Duquette, who also performs the function of general manager under his role with the club, was recently named Executive of the Year by both the Sporting News and Baseball America after helping the team to 96 wins and a division pennant.

The tandem of Duquette and manager Buck Showwalter has produced three straight winning seasons and a pair of playoff appearances over that time.

Angelos said he has no intentions of dissolving that winning combination.

From Dan Connolly of the Sun:

I would say he has done an excellent job with his performance and particularly his performance with Buck. Why would we want to break up that combination that we have? The relationship between Buck and Dan and the Orioles is something we are very pleased with, to put it mildly.

Duquette acknowledged the report Sunday on MLB Network Radio, saying: "I do have a contract and I've always honored my contract."
