Report: Marlins have had dialogue with Jake Peavy
The Miami Marlins appear serious about contending in 2015.
After locking up superstar Giancarlo Stanton to the richest contract in sports history and reportedly attempting to extend a bevy of their top young talent - including star pitcher Jose Fernandez - the Marlins have had dialogue with free agent Jake Peavy, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
Peavy, a three-time All-Star and 2007 Cy Young winner, is coming off a tale of two seasons.
After immense struggles with the Boston Red Sox, Peavy was his usual dependable self after a mid-season trade to the San Francisco Giants. The 33-year-old, who helped the Giants secure a wild-card spot before an eventual World Series title, posted a 3.73 ERA over 202 2/3 innings between the two teams.
While he isn't the overpowering arm he once was - he's seen his strikeout rate decline in three consecutive seasons - the Alabama native should have little trouble securing a multi-year deal.
Miami's interest in Peavy makes sense. He would add a veteran presence to a young rotation and his fly-ball tendencies would fit well in the Marlins' spacious ballpark - one of the game's most power-suppressing stadiums since opening in 2012.
Peavy joins a long list of intriguing mid-tier starting pitching options on the open market for teams not in pursuit of Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields - the headliners of the class.
