Marlins reportedly offer Fernandez 6-year, $40-million extension

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

After inking Giancarlo Stanton to a monster deal, the Miami Marlins are now trying to lock up the rest of a young core with long-term extensions.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Marlins made right-hander Jose Fernandez a six-year guaranteed offer worth close to $40 million. The proposed deal would buy out all of his remaining years of arbitration as well as his first two years of free agency.

In addition to Fernandez, Heyman notes that the Marlins have made long-term offers to outfielder Christian Yelich and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. The team is also expected to make an offer to outfielder Marcell Ozuna sometime this week.

While Fernandez's tenure in the majors has been brief, it's been hugely impressive. In 36 starts, the 22-year-old owns a 16-8 record and 2.25 ERA, while recording 257 strikeouts in 224 1/3 innings of work.

Fernandez won the NL Rookie of the Year in 2013, but underwent Tommy John surgery this past May that will keep him sidelined till June or July of 2015.

Fernandez, who has the making of being a generational talent, is likely to turn down the deal as he's represented by agent Scott Boras. Heyman notes the offer is more of a starting point for negotiations. The contract offer by the Marlins does, however, offer guaranteed money, which can't be taken lightly by a player who will have spent half his big league service time on the shelf once he takes the mound again in 2015.
