McKenzie: Red Wings have significant interest in Sabres' Myers, but price is high

The Detroit Red Wings continue to have significant interest in Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres, but the cost of acquiring the 24-year-old defenseman is believed to be steep, according to Bob McKenzie.

Speaking on NBCSN prior to Wednesday night's game between the Red Wings and Boston Bruins, McKenzie reported the Sabres wanted top prospect Anthony Mantha or sniper Gustav Nyquist, both of whom were deemed non-starters in the negotiation process, in a deal involving Myers.

McKenzie continued:

So now the Red Wings are looking again at Tyler Myers and they want to get a handle. They think he'd make a big difference on their blue line and help to make them that contending team.

But the question then becomes, are they prepared to give up a really top-end prospect like Dylan Larkin - (a 2014) first-round pick who's playing at the University of Michigan. Do (they) give up (their) young kids for a defenseman in his mid-20s? Or do (they) pull (their) horns back in?

Buffalo clearly believes Myers has value as a high-end defenseman, but questions abound as to whether he can find the form he showed early in his career, and what a fair return is based on his level of play in recent years.

The 2009-10 NHL rookie of the year has failed to record a point with six shots on goal and an even plus-minus rating in four games for the Sabres this season.
