Mayweather-Maidana II set for Sept. 13

Forget this LeBron James stuff, Floyd Mayweather controls his own information.

On Thursday, Mayweather confirmed that a rematch with Marcos Maidana is officially coming, tweeting that the fight — dubbed "Mayhem" — will take place on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand and broadcast on Showtime.

The fight announcement had been expected for the past week after Mayweather made mention of giving a rematch to Maidana, who he defeated via 12-round decision on May 3. The first meeting was the toughest bout Mayweather's had in quite some time, with Maidana even disputing the 117-111, 116-112, 114-114 majority decision after the fight.

Neither Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO) nor Maidana (35-4, 31 KO) have fought since the last meeting. Prior to the first bout, Maidana had railed off four consecutive victories to earn the WBA super welterweight title, a strap he lost to Mayweather. The rematch will have the WBA super welterweight title, the WBC welterweight title and The Ring welterweight title all on the line.

Explaining the decision to rematch with Maidana rather than seek a new foe, Mayweather Promotions executive Leonard Ellerbe decided not to respond by simply saying, "Well, who?"

"I don't want to get into the names. It comes down to that the first fight was a great fight and this is a fight that fans wanted to see again," Ellerbe said. "Maidana thought he won the fight. Floyd knows he won the fight. It was a tremendous fight."

This will mark Mayweather's 10th consecutive fight at the MGM Grand, which has become his home court of sorts. Barclays Center in Brooklyn was said to have pressed hard for the fight but came up short.

Mayweather earned more than $80 million for their first bout — after accounting for pay per view receipts. He will surely be looking to top his own record earnings, as he does every time out.
