New Carolina Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis' first decision on the job was made in swift and devastating fashion, as the team announced today that he relieved Kirk Muller, along with assistants John MacLean and Dave Lewis, of their coaching duties.

Francis issued this statement regarding their dismissal via the team's official website

"We thank Kirk, John and Dave for their time and effort during the past three seasons. Kirk and his staff worked very hard, but we feel that the team is in need of a fresh start at this time."

Hurricanes fire head coach Kirk Muller: GM Ron Francis says team 'needed a fresh start'

by May 5, 7:25 PM

The search for the 13th head coach in franchise history is underway for the Carolina Hurricanes after Kirk Muller was relieved of his duties Monday, with executive vice president and general manager Ron Francis offering a simple explanation for the decision.

“I just felt at this point going forward we needed a fresh start,” Francis told reporters at a media conference.

Although the Hurricanes finished 10 points out of the final playoff spot in the East with a disappointing 36-35-11 record, Francis feels the vacant head coach position in Carolina is an enticing one for potential candidates.

"I’ve already had some calls and emails today from people wanting to throw their name in the hat, so I think [position is] very attractive,” Francis said.

Francis said the plan is to have someone in place for the June 27 draft and outlined some of the qualities he'd like the new coach to possess.

“The biggest thing I’m looking for is a guy that’s a teacher,” he said. “You have to be accountable as a player, and having someone in that position that holds them accountable wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

While he thinks there's already quality components on the current roster, Francis stressed that the players share the blame with the coaching staff for last season's disappointing performance and that changes to the squad are possible this offseason.

Just because we change coaches doesn’t mean that everything is status quo in the locker room. We do need to evaluate that. We are looking at everything. We do have more meetings starting tomorrow morning going forward to look at all different facets of the organization from how we draft to what type of players we draft to our make-up and how we develop and so on.

Report: Hurricanes coach Muller 'will be dismissed' at season's end

by Apr 6, 9:26 AM

Kirk Muller's days with the Carolina Hurricanes may be numbered.

Muller will reportedly be relieved of his duties at the end of the season, Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports:

It is, according to sources, a fait accompli in Carolina that Kirk Muller will be dismissed [as] head coach at the conclusion of the season by incoming GM Ron Francis. The Candy Canes have made the playoffs once in eight seasons since winning the 2006 Stanley Cup.

The Hurricanes are 34-33-11 under Muller this season, which places them 13th in the Eastern Conference and seventh in the Metropolitan Division with four games remaining.

The former NHL forward was hired as Hurricanes head coach in November 2011. The team has failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of Muller's three seasons at the helm.

General manager Jim Rutherford will relinquish his role at season's end, leading to speculation that Francis will be promoted to the GM position.
