Alcaraz appointed Algeria boss days after Granada sacking

Lucas Alcaraz's time in the unemployment line did not last long, as the Spaniard was named Algeria manager on Friday, four days after his dismissal from Granada.

Sacked after six months in charge of his third spell with Andalusian La Liga outfit, Alcaraz now becomes the fourth Desert Foxes manager in just over a year after Belgian Georges Leekens stepped down in February following the Africa Cup of Nations favourite's exit from the group stages.

The Algeria gig is Alcaraz's fourth appointment in as many years after short tenures with Levante, Elche - a position he left after just six days - and Granada preceded his first national team managerial hiring.

Sitting bottom of its 2018 World Cup qualifying group with one point from its opening two fixtures and five points adrift of leader Nigeria, Alcaraz will be looked upon to salvage a dire period for the North African heavyweight. Algeria has already dropped a 3-1 result at Uyo, Nigeria after opening qualifiers with a 1-1 draw with Cameroon in October.
