Granada has appointed former England international defender Tony Adams as its manager until the end of the season, the club announced on Monday.

The dismissal of Lucas Alcaraz was announced in the same press release after he oversaw Sunday's 3-1 home defeat to Valencia. The Andalusians are on a winless run of six matches and are seven points adrift of safety with seven games remaining.

Alcaraz was in his third coaching stint at the club after assuming the post in October 2016.

Adams, 50, only represented Arsenal during his playing days and is a legendary figure there through collecting four top-flight titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He also captained the Gunners and has a statue outside the Emirates Stadium in his honour.

But his coaching career has been less distinguished. He most famously lasted 15 Premier League matches in charge of Portsmouth, steering the south-coasters to just two wins and four draws before being given the boot. Adams' last job was a brief spell overseeing Gabala in Azerbaijan.

His modest managerial record is supplemented by his advisory role for DDMC, a Chinese football management company which is associated with Granada owner Jiang Lizhang.

Granada's appointment is being widely viewed as an stop-gap measure, hence Adams' short-term contract.
