Pedroia to undergo MRI on left leg

Having been held out of the lineup for two straight days with swelling in his left knee, Dustin Pedroia is scheduled for an MRI on Monday, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.

The Boston Red Sox second baseman was pulled from Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles after being spiked by a slide from Manny Machado.

While a disabled list stint isn't guaranteed, the swelling in Pedroia's knee and ankle hasn't gone away as the team expected, leading it to schedule a precautionary MRI. In his stead, utility infielder Marco Hernandez has been manning second base.

The 33-year-old is a veteran in a relatively young Red Sox clubhouse and has started relatively slowly, slashing .258/.329/.274 through his first 16 games. As the lineup's regular leadoff hitter, his OBP is still buoyed by a favorable walk rate, though Pedroia has yet to hit his first home run of the 2017 campaign.

"The fact that he still has the symptoms he does, we're going to rule everything out," Farrell told Ben Standig of MLB.com. "His importance to us speaks for itself. As with any of our players, when you get into a situation like this, you give it a 24- to 48-hour period to see how it responds. At this point, it warrants a further look."
