Tottenham granted extension on Wembley decision
Tottenham has agreed to an extension with Wembley National Stadium Limited (WNSL) concerning a decision to play its home matches at the UK's largest grounds next season as it awaits the construction of its new stadium.
After securing approval from the Brent Council to play 27 fixtures at the national stadium next season in front of a capacity 90,000 crowd, Spurs were granted a March 31 deadline to make a decision.
That deadline has now been extended a month, with a statement on Tottenham's website Friday confirming the club has until April 30 to confirm plans to play at Wembley amid the partial demolition of White Hart Lane.
For Tottenham, there are several variables in play that prompted the WNSL's extension. Uncertain if the club's new £800-million 61,000 seater will be ready for the start of the 2018-19 campaign, Spurs could stick around at White Hart Lane next season before moving to Wembley for the following season.
"While everyone is eager to know if this is our last season at the Lane, we shall only make the decision to decommission our historic White Hart Lane when we have greater certainty on the delivery of the new stadium," Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy told BBC Sport.
Even with several factors yet to be determined, Tottenham's statement adds that the club still plans on playing its home fixtures at Wembley next season.
"Our intention remains to spend next season at the national stadium before returning to our new stadium in Tottenham for the 2018/19 season."
