49ers' Lynch: Kaepernick was close to signing elsewhere, could still return

Despite a report that NFL teams are scared to sign Colin Kaepernick due to his political statements, San Francisco 49ers general manger John Lynch says his team's former quarterback isn't hearing crickets.

Lynch revealed Friday that at least one team was close to signing Kaepernick, who became a free agent at the beginning of March.

"(Kaepernick) was, in everyone's mind in this league, very close to signing a deal with a team at a really good number and it fell through, apparently," Lynch told KNBR radio, according to NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman.

Lynch added that he hasn't shut the door on a potential return to San Francisco for Kaepernick, though he admitted the signings of Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley make the move unlikely.

"Here we are with two quarterbacks, but like we said, we're gonna look at every option," Lynch said. "The likelihood of that happening has probably gone down significantly, but we're not going to close our mind or our options on anyone, including him."
