Report: Rays will 'look into' signing Lawrie

One lightning rod personality could potentially find himself in the lightning capital of the United States.

The Tampa Bay Rays will "look into" signing infielder Brett Lawrie, who became a free agent Saturday after his release from the Chicago White Sox, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Topkin notes the club is intrigued by his right-handed bat.

The 27-year-old has moved around over the last few years, failing to find a permanent home after being traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Oakland Athletics as part of the Josh Donaldson trade in 2014. A year later, he was dealt once again to the White Sox.

Logically, the best fit in Tampa Bay would be at second base, with Evan Longoria manning third on an everyday basis. The Rays recently moved Brad Miller to second after the Logan Morrison signing, so there would certainly be competition if Lawrie were to sign.

In 94 games last year with the White Sox, Lawrie slashed .248/.310/.413 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs. The Langley, British Columbia native has faced injury problems throughout his career, averaging only 98 games through six years in the league.
