Bowles: Revis' arrest had nothing to do with his release
New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles spoke to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday morning and made his first public statements on the release of veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis.
The Jets announced the release of their longtime stalwart on the back end on Feb. 28. Bowles said the roster move was not influenced by the fact Revis was recently charged with four first-degree felonies for an altercation with two men in Pittsburgh.
He did admit to being surprised by the news, however.
"It's shocking because I know the man, forget the football player, I know the man. I know he has good character and is a good guy and sometimes you get put in situations that things happen. I don't really know what happened," Bowles said.
Instead, the decision to move on from the veteran of 10 seasons was largely based on performance and finances. The Jets cleared $9.3 million in cap space by releasing Revis.
