The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Tom Gilbert from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick, the Kings announced Wednesday.

The Capitals will send the fifth-round selection to Los Angeles if Gilbert plays in half of Washington's playoff games and if the team advances beyond the second round, according to the Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.

Gilbert is a pending unrestricted free agent and carries a $1.4-million cap hit, with the Kings retaining 20 percent in the deal, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

Gilbert has split the season between the Kings and the team's AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, collecting a goal and four assists in 18 games with Los Angeles.

Glbert, 34, has 655 games of NHL experience under his belt in a career that's also included stints with the Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, and Montreal Canadiens.
