Dom Dwyer inching closer to U.S. citizenship amid USMNT interest

Sporting Kansas City forward Dom Dwyer might soon be embarking on a new adventure as his international career could get its start by mid-February.

Born and raised in England, Dwyer came to the U.S. in 2009 when he attended Tyler Junior College in Texas. As a result of his enrollment, he was eligible for the 2012 SuperDraft, where he was picked 16th overall by Sporting KC.

Since then, the 26-year-old striker has enjoyed a prolific scoring career in MLS, notching 53 strikes in 113 appearances with Sporting KC.

And in just a few weeks, Dwyer - who has never played for England - should become eligible for Bruce Arena's U.S. men's national team pool.

"February 14 marks the date of my five years of holding a green card, so then I'll be eligible for citizenship," Dwyer told ESPN FC. "That paperwork is sitting there, ready to filed on the 14th, and we'll see where it goes from there."

For Dwyer, playing for the U.S. isn't just a chance to enjoy international football - it's also an opportunity to repay the country that has afforded him his professional career.

"I think any footballer, you want to play on the international stage. That's the biggest there is. To play for your country would be amazing," Dwyer said. "I've lived here for about nine years now in the U.S. I wasn't born here but this is, if not my second home, my home. This country has given me a lot. If I have the opportunity to give something back, I would jump at it."
