Report: Rockies in negotiations with Trumbo, Encarnacion

The Colorado Rockies are looking to build an offensive juggernaut in Denver.

Despite adding Ian Desmond to a five-year, $70-million deal earlier this week, the Rockies are also reportedly in negotiations with both free-agent sluggers Mark Trumbo and Edwin Encarnacion, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.

Desmond is currently penciled in at first base for the Rockies, but adding either Trumbo or Encarnacion would likely push Desmond to the outfield, allowing Colorado to deal one of Gerardo Parra, Charlie Blackmon, or Carlos Gonzalez for a front-of-the-rotation starter they're seeking.

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich has told both Gonzalez and Blackmon not to worry about trade rumors this winter, but adding another big bat would make either expendable.

The addition of either Trumbo or Encarnacion would give the Rockies, who scored the most runs in the National League in 2016, one of the best lineups in the majors.

Trumbo is coming off a season in which he bashed a league-leading 47 homers, and owns a .333/.423/.911 slash line with eight home runs in 12 career games at Coors Field. He isn't a strong defender, but does have experience at both corner outfield positions and first base.

Encarnacion is also coming off a highly productive year.

He hit 42 home runs to go with a .886 OPS in 160 games and has averaged 39 home runs over the last five years. The biggest knock on the 33-year-old, however, is that he's never appeared in more than 80 games at first base in a single season and is better suited to be a DH on a long-term deal.

Having already forfeited their 11th-overall pick in next year's draft to sign Desmond, the Rockies would be forced to surrender a second-round pick in order to sign either Trumbo or Encarnacion as they both rejected a qualifying offer.
