Report: Nets mulling offer sheet for RFA Motiejunas

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Brooklyn Nets are considering signing Houston Rockets restricted free-agent big man Donatas Motiejunas to an offer sheet, The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowksi reports, citing sources.

Motiejunas, who has been locked in a contract dispute with the Rockets since the summer, visited the Nets for a physical during this past week. The Nets are "likely" to sign him, though they won't do so before Friday, sources told ESPN's Marc Stein.

A failed physical due to nagging back issues kiboshed a trade that would've sent the 26-year-old to the Detroit Pistons at last season's trade deadline, and because he remains unsigned past the Nov. 23 deadline, he's ineligible to be traded this season. After that deadline passed, the Rockets pulled their most recent offer to him.

That offer was reportedly for a two-year deal, with only the first year - at around $7 million - fully guaranteed. Motiejunas and his reps were convinced he had more value than that.

The Rockets will have three days to match any offer sheet the Nets submit, and though their reluctance to guarantee even a second season makes it seem unlikely, Houston has maintained a strong interest in keeping the 7-footer, according to Wojnarowski.

Motiejunas averaged 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 37 games with the Rockets last season, down from 12 points and 5.9 rebounds in 71 games the season prior.

According to Stein's sources, the Nets are "comfortable" with Motiejunas' current health status after an evaluation was conducted by their team doctors.
