An ode to Charlie Strong's turtlenecks

Michael C. Johnson / USA TODAY Sports

Charlie Strong's turtlenecks, we hardly knew ye.

You lasted only three years at Texas, and we're sad to see you go, even if it turns out to be the right move for the Longhorns. Though your wearer, Charlie Strong, was fired after going 16-21, you did your best to help his cause, especially when you came in orange.

Updated stats are hard to find on such topics, but we do know Strong's orange turtleneck did, at one point, have a 9-5 record at Texas.

That mark included a signature win over Red River rival Oklahoma in 2015, a triumph that nearly ruined the Sooners' season and may have simultaneously extended Strong's stay in Austin.

Unfortunately, Strong's white turtleneck proved to be less loyal, as it posted a 3-8 record over its first 11 appearances. Strong continued to give it opportunities, but it continued to let him down.

With pressure mounting on Strong to win more games this season, even the trusty orange turtleneck began to falter. The famous shirt started taking hits, one week after the next.

Eventually, Strong and his turtlenecks knew they were running out of time. In a last-ditch effort to potentially save his job, he wore the orange turtleneck Friday night against TCU, but to no avail. The Longhorns lost the game, and Strong lost his job the next day.

And so, we'll no longer have the privilege of awaiting updates like these:

New Texas coach Tom Herman is known to have a more updated wardrobe, making it very unlikely the Texas turtie is seen again.

So long, Charlie Strong's turtlenecks. We hardly knew ye.
