Steven Gerrard has called time on his illustrious 19-year career.

After spending the last two years abroad in Major League Soccer with the Los Angeles Galaxy, the former Liverpool star officially announced Thursday that he is retiring from football.

A statement from Gerrard on Liverpool's website read: "Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football.

"I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.”

Before finishing his career in the United States, Gerrard was Liverpool's longest-ever serving captain after donning the coveted armband from 2003 until his final match with the Reds in 2015.

During his 17 years on the Merseyside, the 36-year-old appeared in 710 matches and scored 186 goals while helping Liverpool capture eight major trophies, including a pair of FA Cups (2001, 2006), the UEFA Cup (2001) and the Champions League (2005).

He also finishes his career as England's fourth-most capped player with 114 appearances. After guiding The Three Lions to six major tournaments, Gerrard announced his international retirement after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Speculation over his future plans has persisted since his departure from the LA Galaxy was confirmed after the team's elimination from the MLS Playoffs earlier this month.

He revealed that he had been contacted by English League One side MK Dons regarding the club's managerial vacancy, but admitted it was "too soon" to step back into the game.

Instead, Gerrard says he will take time to decide which direction he will take as he considers a "number of options."

"Thank you to the amazing fans of Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy for the incredible backing you have given me throughout my career," he added. "Your loyalty and support has meant the world.

"I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be. I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon."
