Report: Mourinho furious at FA after Rooney apologises for drunken night

Jose Mourinho has apparently slammed the Football Association for allowing Wayne Rooney to be, as The Sun's Jake Ryan and Amy Jones reported, "too drunk to stand" after partying in the early hours of Sunday morning while on England duty.

Sky Sports understands Rooney was joined by Everton's Phil Jagielka and members of England's medical and support team after Friday's 3-0 defeat of Scotland, and the national team and Manchester United captain has since apologised for his conduct.

Mourinho, Rooney's boss at United, is said to be particularly incensed that FA employees were in the vicinity when the forward is believed to have crashed a wedding party "with bloodshot eyes and red wine-stained lips," as The Sun reported.

A spokesperson representing Rooney told PA Sport earlier on Wednesday:

Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published today.

Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.

Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both (England interim manager) Gareth Southgate and (FA technical director) Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise.

He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures.

While Mourinho is understood to not object to Rooney being granted a night off with the rest of the England squad, the fact that the skipper was allowed to behave in this manner under the watch of the FA - he had opted to stay in the Grove Hotel rather than go out in central London with other teammates - and the incident being made public has infuriated the Portuguese.

Rooney subsequently didn't report to Three Lions training Sunday with a "minor knee injury," and was then sent back to United on Tuesday, as Southgate didn't intend on fielding him in that evening's 2-2 friendly draw with Spain.

The 31-year-old was then reportedly assessed by United's medical staff at its Carrington training ground, and is expected to be fit for Saturday's Premier League visit from Arsenal.
