Oklahoma has suspended running back Joe Mixon for Thursday night's game against Iowa State due to a violation of team rules.

"OU sets very high standards and they must be met by all of our student-athletes," head coach Bob Stoops said in a short statement.

The team offered no further information on why Mixon was handed the ban, but Ryan Aber and Graham Lee Brewer of The Oklahoman report he was involved in an incident with a parking attendant Tuesday morning.

"He was frustrated, as most of us are when we get a ticket," Mixon's attorney, Blake Johnson, said. "He tore the ticket up in front of the parking attendant, and threw it on the ground."

The attendant later filed a complaint with the university police.

"We are very confident that Joe did nothing criminal," Johnson added.

Mixon also addressed the incident in a one-line statement as part of the Sooners' announcement.

"I regret that I did not respond appropriately to parking attendants and understand, and accept the consequences," he said.

Mixon is no stranger to off-field incidents, as he was suspended for the entire 2014 season for punching a female student in the face, causing multiple broken bones.

This year, Mixon leads Oklahoma in rushing with 813 yards and five touchdowns. He's also racked up 357 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

The suspension leaves Oklahoma shorthanded in the backfield, as fellow rusher Samaje Perine has been ruled out against the Cyclones because of injury. True freshman Abdul Adams will be the team's only running back on scholarship when they head to Ames.
