USC's Helton: Browne 'deserves' opportunity to transfer anywhere

It was the longstanding professionalism of Max Browne that led USC to grant him permission to transfer anywhere he wants, even if it comes back to haunt the Trojans in the future.

USC confirmed Tuesday that it signed a permission-to-contact waiver for the quarterback, allowing him to begin discussing a transfer with any school in the NCAA - even in the Pac-12.

"He asked for permission to talk to everyone and we granted everyone," USC coach Clay Helton told reporters, according to Kyle Bonagura of ESPN.

"Out of respect for the type of guy he is and how he's handled things around here, I personally think he deserves it."

Browne entered the season as the team's starter, but quickly lost the job to Sam Darnold. He spent the previous three years backing up Cody Kessler, after arriving at USC as the No. 2 pocket passer recruit in 2013.

"Max has been so good to us and so good to this football team, and is a graduate, and that's what's most important," Helton said. "He's graduated from this university and he's done everything right. So, he deserves the opportunity to find his perfect fit, whether it's here or someplace else.

"Out of respect for him, a guy that I truly love, I want him to be able to talk to other folks and see what is the perfect fit."

Browne, a junior, will be eligible to play at any school next season as a graduate transfer.

In parts of five games this season, including three starts, Browne has thrown for 507 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
