White confirms McGregor will retain 145-pound belt through UFC 205
Conor McGregor will get a chance to make history on Nov. 12. at Madison Square Garden.
UFC president Dana White confirmed Tuesday that McGregor will not be stripped of his featherweight championship prior to his UFC 205 fight with lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, meaning the Irishman could become the first man to hold two titles simultaneously in UFC history.
McGregor's journey to become a two-belt champion - a feat he's long made know is one of his ultimate goals - started when he won the featherweight title from Jose Aldo in the fastest finish in UFC history.
"Notorious" then set his sights on then-lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos, but the bout fell through after Dos Anjos went down with an injury, steering McGregor onto a collision course with Nate Diaz.
Alvarez took the title from Dos Anjos in July, and publicly campaigned for the superfight against McGregor.
Now both men will get their wish, facing off in the main event of UFC's first ever visit to New York City.
