Report: United's Shaw set for scan, Mourinho's doghouse

Reuters

A tough week for Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw appears to be getting worse after reports surfaced Monday that the England international was slated for a scan on a longstanding groin concern.

Shaw, 21, played 85 minutes in Saturday's stunning 3-1 defeat to Watford, and if gaffer Jose Mourinho's criticisms of the Southampton product weren't enough, it appears as if the left-back could face a spell on the treatment table.

While the club has not confirmed a scan for the player who last year was the victim of a horrific season-ending leg break courtesy of PSV's Hector Moreno, BBC Sport's Simon Stone reports Shaw will have his groin examined ahead of Wednesday's League Cup match with Northampton.

Hard not to feel bad for Shaw, who was far from United's worst performer on a day when the Red Devils capitulated under the expectations of a side with realistic title ambitions.

Mourinho was characteristically harsh when discussing Shaw's performance against the Hornets, and rather than focusing on how his tactics - namely a two-man midfield featuring Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba - appeared laboured and outdated, the Portuguese gaffer singled-out his star left-back.

Comparing Nordin Amrabat's opener for Watford with a pivotal goal conceded in the Manchester Derby, Mourinho said, "The first Man City goal and this second goal against Watford - you can find an incredible similarity, which is (Aleksandar) Kolarov has the ball in a difficult situation in the corner and my players, instead of going up to press they decide to give space.

"And here for the second goal, (Nordin) Amrabat receives the ball and our left-back is 25 metres from him instead of five metres. But even at 25 metres, you have to jump and go and press, but no, we wait."

Sticks and stones for Shaw, who could be facing a worse outcome than a lambasting from his gaffer should the results of his scan come back with bad news.
