The Baltimore Ravens have released running back Justin Forsett as part of the club's cutdowns to a 53-man roster, the team announced Saturday.

Forsett is one of the more surprising cuts of this year's deadline day, since he'd entered training camp as the presumed leader in a crowded backfield rotation.

Though injury issues led to a down season in 2015, Forsett enjoyed a late-career breakout season the year prior, posting an impressive 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns upon landing with the club.

Forsett responded promptly on Twitter:

Terrance West, Javorius Allen, and fourth-round rookie Kenneth Dixon all now have clearer paths to prominent roles, and a competition between the three could very well carry on throughout the 2016 season.

Dixon and West were the most productive players in their limited preseason reps. Dixon racked up 107 yards on 22 carries, while West took his 25 attempts for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Among the Ravens' other notable cuts Saturday are linebacker Arthur Brown, safety Terrence Brooks, guard Vladimir Ducasse, and wide receivers Jeremy Butler and Keenan Reynolds.
